Hello - I have been unzen and over-peened my scythe so it is a little wavy/warped towards the tip. I can still mow, which is good because the grass hasn't stopped growing. I'd very much appreciate you give some advice/suggestions as to how to correct this. I'd humbly request a video, but that would probably require a warped blade, and I suspect yours are all near perfect!

The muscle memory and skill shown here may not seem like much to most people, but my goodness this tradesman is good.

That's really cool. It's amazing how much easier a good sharp scythe gets through high grass. You should make a video about the windrow garden.

Greetings! I wonder if a scythe is really the proper weeding tool here. My experience is that I can use a scythe most effectively if I have space enough to swing it along the path of the imaginary circumference of the blade. On the other hand, I'm a great fan of push mowers, another great class of traditional hand tools. Have you considered using them in confined spaces? Push mowers, however, also mulch the weed super fine and maybe that's not what you want. God bless you, keep on scything!

Nice guide, I read your blogpost about it. I will be getting a scythe from Niels and try to replicate his version, I probably have some hardware to put it together.

The edge is probably work hardened as a result of the peening. Honing will not work harden the metal, whether it is iron or steel.

Do you find that this ensures perfect year round mulch cover? Do you need to double up the windrow as shown in the video or would one pass be sufficient?

This morning was my first cut for the season. I got my kit from you the other year and use it to make hay for my garden beds. The worst part is waiting for the grass to grow so I can break out the scythe.

I think it is very unsafe way. There is much safer and faster way to sharpen it.

I've always wanted to use a scythe like this, but they're not common in Brazil, and they're very expensive.

is there any kind of cover for the hay in winter? i live in the pacific northwest and it seems like with our constant drizzle, it would be soaked through if not covered in some way.

I was taught to use a scythe when I was a kid in the 1960's. It did not have the cradle on it though We had a mix of tall oats with rye grass which is shorter. Cut it all in a long smooth stroke and lay it down at the end of the stroke so it can be picked up easy with a pitchfork. Scythe blade needs to be sharpened often.

I can’t wait to try this. The yield looks less than potatoes planted deeper in soil, but the labor for the whole operation seems a lot easier. If your back can’t take much digging, fewer potatoes is still much better than no potatoes & a field empty of food. I like how the windrow blends right into its surroundings too. Thanks for sharing this method.

Is that a “bush blade” - if so did you peen it extra thin to be able to mow that soft grass? I’m thinking of doing this as I need a really short blade for my even narrower garden paths. Any advice so welcome, thanks 😊
